Interesting topics from the Forum dealing with Medical Marijuana
The concept of the use of medical marijuana is one of the most interesting topics Big Al has dealt with in a long time. Following is a discussion that resulted from some of the valuable comments we received from the topic of the Weekend Show.

Self medication is generally not a good idea. But then again, you know that!
Sadly, there could have been lots of research in the past had it not been for Nixon’s war on drugs begun in the early ’70’s. Yes, I realize he had no monopoly of bigotry. DC is full of them in all colors and persuasions. But the classification of Cannabis as a schedule 1 drug was devastating to real knowledge about it’s benefits.
There simply wasn’t any money in it and if successful, it could have dented the sales of Big Pharma………….Any wonder why it is only now that a few scientists are beginning to look at the benefits? Thankfully Canada is there and I’m sure several other countries in the world will add to the knowledge. I’ve no illusions that little if any will come out of this country. JMO
Very astute statement Silverdollar.
As you can tell, I am very interested in this topc.
Silverdollar,
It actually demonstrates how dependent on the US the rest of the world actually is.
Spain has legally grown and used hemp as far as I know continuously, without doing any medical research. Hemp seeds are easily available there. Sold on market stalls and other shops. I was surprised when I noticed it in Las Ramblas, Barcelona a couple of years ago, actually labelled cannabis, in seed packets.
The U.Sl is truthfully way behind the rest of the world. The interesting question here is why? Was there perhaps another industry and its lobbyists behind that.
Think of some of the poor “inmates” in prisons that are the victims of this. Just wait until this product starts to greatly reduce suffering and provides some miraculous cures!
It may produce some cures, but I doubt any miraculous ones……it has been used too long.
It is primarily used in India for upset stomach/nausea.
Alas, there is little evidence of cancer reduction, but it is hard to tell because of lack of double blind mass studies.
There is evidence in mice. There is evidence in petri dish. Dut it is a long step from mice to humans.
The most interesting medical research, about to be released in the Journal Nature, comes out of University of Exeter, England, which describes work on cell aging reversal.
The lead investigator is Dongsheng Cai.)
It might be published by now….I miss access to university libraries now!
Big Al,
In terms of natural compounds, which have shown effects on cancer and other diseases in the lab, and also to be anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-virial and anti-biotic is simply ground apple seeds.
I firget the strain of apples used, but I do remember the approx results; by weight ground apple seed was about 1,000 times more effective at killing cancer cells than Adriamyacin.
The work was done a while ago, and never followed up by Big Pharma.
Why was it never followed up?
Sorry, but I don’t know.
If I had to guess. Probably lack of funding., but I really don’t know.
I
A search will show various seeds have been used as anti-cancer agents. e.g:

So, this is not the first time!
Here’s an oddity, which true.
Movement from region to region occurred only rarely in England prior to world War I, so regional variations in health often were used to detect possible cures/agents for health (pro and con)
e.g. People living in ares with higher concentrations of fluorides in the water hsd less tooth decay.
Strangely, popular drinks have a regional dependence.
e.g. Dandelion and burdock carbonated drink (tastes similar to American root beer) was popular in the east of England and the northwest.; the same areas which had longevity of the population and had lower incidence of cancer.
(But they were both areas of less automobile use and purer air, so it’s dangerous to conclude a cancer cure.)
Both ginger ale and the fermented version ginger beer were commonly made at home, not bought prior to WWII.
Ginger root has good medicinal benefits.
Ginger biscuits (cookies) are popular even today.
The only advantage of a national health system in my mind is a large data base, which could be used advantageously, but is not much used as far as I know.
Yet another interesting comment.
Stefan Molyneux’s personal view on cancer:
Incredible Professor, and I will post this in about five minutes.
As a person who has been suffering from cancer since 2004-5, subject to 4 operations so far, I have been using a 25% addition of CBD oil to my sunscreen creams for about 2 years. (I consider topical use as not likely to cause any complications.)
My anecdotal conclusion is that the CBD oil is barely absorbed but remains on the surface of the skin. I doubt if, therefore, it has much anti-cancer properties when used topically.
It cannot be used in cooking that involves high heat, so physical ingestion is slightly a problem. I have on occasion tried adding it to salad dressings.
The problem with all experimental self-medication is guessing effective dosage level; and besides one person’s experience does nothing to create statistics.
The source for best medical information on marijuana is India and the Middle East.
(again, even then the information is often folklore as opposed to scientific, and often not even in published form. ) It is also difficult to distinguish between placebo effect and reality, although I consider myself a highly skeptical person by nature.
