We had ball putting this week’s show together. Big Al traveled up to Vancouver, BC to attend the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference put on by Cambridge House, and what a great conference. The Martin Family really knows how to do it right.  We talked with some of the best in our business.  Obviously more this week on hard asset investing.  We do have some great Daily Editorials on political and macro economic issues on our site.

    Thought for the Day:
    As Hawking once said:
We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.
I would add: But that does not mean we always understand the action of markets.

      Jan 25, 2014 25:38 AM

re seg 7: brings to mind. Matthew 25:31-46

      New International Version (NIV)
      The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

The NIV……..has twisted language….and some of the meaning have been lost….You need to use the KJV……….

          Jan 25, 2014 25:50 AM

I have heard that before. Now, I am not an expert but don’t you think that the basic message is the same?

Do not add and do not take away, the words of this book …..Revelations 22 18&19

            Jan 25, 2014 25:42 PM

I have to disagree Jerry, nothing added or taken away with the NIV. King James is old English, not really the American language. Not worth a debate however…both are very acceptable to most evangelicals.

Hello Bobby………….1611 King James Bible.com………..go and read this might help in our conversation……………and you will see where I am coming from….
            IRON SHARPING IRON……….stay strong………Respectfully…….Jerry

        Jan 25, 2014 25:47 AM

And therein lies the reason for my volunteer work. I do it because He told me to.

I vehemently disagree with comments made in section 6.
I believe the major problem is that the brokerage scum in Canada naked short and will choose to kill perfectly viable companies to make a few extra bucks. They will talk companies into giving out warrants at financings (saying that has to be done because the general public demand it) in order to use them to cover naked shorts.

      Jan 26, 2014 26:47 PM

      Cannot disagree Professor!

CFS Thanks for your posts. Something about Hawking I have never liked: From a Christian perspective I’d put it as follows: We are all sinners (fallen creatures from how the Creator intended us to be), occupying a beautiful and fragile world. Nor does knowing as much as we do elevate us into anything special. After all given no choice, the monkeys live according to their instincts. We the human race do have choice.

For without wisdom and an all-consuming love for God all the knowledge under the sun turns the human race into a laughing stock, only to be pitied.

Each of us has a soul. It is God’s gift to us. What we do with our soul is our gift to God.

    Best, A

      CFS
      Jan 25, 2014 25:35 AM

      Andrew,
You probably did not like Hawking’s alignment with Laplace in stating that he has no need for the hypothesis of a deity.
So why did the physical embodiment of your deity, Jesus Christ, not choose to enlighten man with, for instance, even the knowledge that the earth rotates around the sun and not vice versa?

        Jan 25, 2014 25:39 AM

CFS – the very expression ‘hypothesis of a deity’ exudes that hubris which has been the undoing of humankind. Because for those who believe GOD IS – END OF! As for Jesus he was in the business of teaching wisdom not knowledge, and it confounded his critics then as well as today. For if he was God, they argue, why didn’t he call on a phalanx of angels to intervene over his crucifixion? Intellectuals will never get this, given that worldly wisdom will forever argue it’s a complete nonsense!

          b
          Jan 25, 2014 25:15 PM

Hi Andrew, that crucifiction is somthing I could never figure out.
Whats the big deal? There was no way to kill the god, the god knew that going to the crucifiction. All a play? What did he give? To me, it all ment nothing. He didnt need angels saving him, he mearly needed to use a “word” and could create and entire new reality had he chosen to do so.
I just cant see it being somthing valuable givin, like thos men in 1914-18 charging machine gun fire with bayonets, those guys knew they were dead and did give their lives. But a god? Didnt give anything, a lesson maybe a gift, at best.
But even a gift givin is a trade if anyone knows of it. I guess ya just gotta believe?
I know the religions have the meaning figured out, but I just have never seen the logic. To each his own I guess.

I agree with cfs, I too do not do “good deeds” because I am told to.
I am responsible for both good and ill on my part.

            Jan 25, 2014 25:59 PM

Well, b….think of it as Jesus standing in for you. He took the punishment that you and i deserve. Now when God looks at the believer he sees Jesus and sees that your punishment is paid in full. What a gift.

            b
            Jan 25, 2014 25:45 PM

Bobby, Im not trying to be derogotory or insulting, seriously, I just dont see the point.
I understand what the christians feel the “point” is, but in your example, why couldnt a god use his “word” to change things instead? My point is there is no point to a tourture death, its just not necessary. Not if the belief of “all powerfull” is true.

            Jan 26, 2014 26:18 AM

Belated reply b…..Unlike many Christians I see Jesus’ death as the final means whereby he made his ‘divine’ point. That in the end meekness (not weakness) will always rout all violence and evil. Of course in earthly terms that appears a complete nonsense which for me and one day before Holocaust Memorial day begs the question: Could not the Jews, indeed should not the Jews have stood up to their persecutors way before it all became too late?

As for good deeds, that’s another story entirely. I’m more of the gnostic persuasion which sees light and darkness as intrinsically connected. The trouble for me b is that I’m between a rock and a hard place when it comes to understanding my faith. While feeling thoroughly ill at ease with those locked into their religious certitude on the one hand, I frequently get misunderstood on the other.

            Best, Andrew

            Jan 26, 2014 26:01 AM

which brings us to the resurrection and the fulfillment of the prophecy.

          Jan 26, 2014 26:18 PM

          Rev: Andrew:

I’m not an astrophysicist or even a mathematician and don’t understand the Universe notwithstanding constant efforts to do the same.

The thing that makes the most sense to me is “Pascal’s Gamble”. If Scriptural promises are true and we follow them, then we will be home free. If scriptural promises are not true, then what have we lost? I would submit nothing as virtue and good living per the Sermon on the Mount and other passages have their own rewards.

As you no doubt know, Pascal was a very spiritual person and Is the father of modern calculus. I like the odds that he projected hundreds of years ago.

      Franky,
I don’t always understand your posts.
If you are implying that it is wrong to donate to children’s hospitals because they endorse research into conventional medical technology, then I would disagree with you.
As someone who has survived a brain tumor, albeit with loss off 20% of my brain, including half my sight, and gone through the getting my affairs in order routine, I would not knock medical technology. (Neither would I knock a ketogenic diet)
I believe a solution comes from always asking questions, trying every possible solution, until something works. Steve Jobs should have combined his vegan diet with chemotherapy. Incidentally, in his case, occasional use of hemp protein might have helped.

Unfortunately Coal, the most used energy source in many countries, is also a source of cancer via its atmospheric introduction of radioactive particulates when burnt. Probably more so than nuclear power. The world must have energy, so what’s a country to do?
    Go to renewables?
The US has 679 renewable energy programs distributed over 23 different Agencies and yet is barely replacing any of energy infrastructure.

sociated Press By Joshua Goodman, Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Nicolas Maduro’s government is slashing the amount of U.S. dollars Venezuelans traveling to Florida and other popular destinations take with them under decade-old currency controls.

Travelers just to Florida will be allowed to charge a maximum of $700 annually on their Venezuelan credit cards and will be allowed to buy no more than $300 in cash. That compares with limits of $2,500 in credit and $500 in cash they were previously allowed for trips to Florida, an amount that will be maintained for the remaining 49 US states.

The restrictions published Friday in the Official Gazette follow a partial devaluation of the bolivar that has made it costlier for Venezuelans to travel abroad and which the government hopes will help safeguard a dwindling local dollar supply.

How long will it be before the US has to introduce capital controls if the US Dollar ever gets attacked.

I also know that at Davos currently the EU is discussing this topic as a way of stabilizing the euro.
Such controls were common in various european countries after WWII. E.g. England had a fifty pound per person limit allowed to be taken abroad even in the early 1960s.

Those that ripped off the poor who saved and invested hoping to do better in life also ripped off by extension God Almighty by means of fraud , theft and short selling. If they would do it to the thrifty hard working poor they would do it to God.

When Jesus was working as a carpenter before becoming heavily involved in representing his Heavenly Father how many Jews defrauded him? How many real estate speculators priced him out of Judea? How many mocked him and looked down on him for being a humble carpenter? If they would do it to the son of god and a humble carpenter they would do it to his counterparts today and even God the Father in Heaven given the chance to do so.

The movie American Hustle is based on the Abscam case, but it starts out with the words ” Some of this movie maybe true” the audience starts laughing because you know everyone has their own version of the truth including the government, and you will never know the real story with so many liars out there.

The main character drives around in a 1972 light blue Cadillac Seville, this one is a two door with power windows, and you keep thinking what a stupid car from a standpoint of design, those cars were beautiful to look at but for instance what would you do if the car ended up in the drink and you had to get out. I guess we could run that one by Senator Ted Kennedy. DT

1st there is a great flush.
2nd there is a great leverage.
3rd there is a great leveling.
4th there is a great reset.

We are in the half time where the leverage has ended. Third quarter comes after a halftime adjustment where leverage will no longer work and a leveling in all assets and scores plays out. The last quarter will finalize the game and begin a new century with new world champion while the old champion retires to nurse its broken bones.

CFS, were you aware that St Judees Hospital does not offer assistance to all families with children fighting cancer. When you call seeking assistance they will tell you that they only give assistance if your child has a type of cancer that they are currently researching and looking for cures. A person I am connected with has a 10 yearold daughter who was refused help because the brain cancer she has is not presently under investigation. That makes their advertising a lie.

      Jan 26, 2014 26:30 PM

    Jan 25, 2014 25:02 PM

LGC, I was not aware of that. Thank you for the info.

(Now you may think me callous.)
The reason I give is not to help individuals, but to help society as a whole.
If St. Jude’s believe their money is better spent on focused research than helping individuals, I do not have a problem. Focused research may be the greater good in the long run.
I’m feel sorry for you, however, and hope you will find help somewhere. I wish cures could be found for all cancers, and my gut feel os we are only a couple of decades away from that. Alas, I also believe that society will not be able to treat all victims.
Just as society is not going to be able to feed all that are hungry.
