The Concept Of Picking A Top Or Bottom
No matter where you look we hear “experts” calling tops and bottoms in a wide range of markets. We also hear how spot on it seems everyone is at calling the exact top or bottom. The fact is these people were usually calling the same top or bottom for months if not years prior. An even more important point is that trying to call that exact turn is a risky game.
Dana Lyons joins me today to discuss his thoughts on how to trade around market turns. He addresses which is easier to call and outlines some charts (below) for the US markets that should be noted.

I agree with Dana that it is easier to position near bottoms because they are generally emotional capitulation events.
However, there are many chartists that have used Fibonacci retracement levels, or Japanese Candlestick patterns, or Trend-line Support, or Slow Stochastic crosses, or Pivot levels to nail bottoms with a science and methodology to their approach.
To say traders can’t use TA to hit tops and bottoms is bull. It isn’t easy, but it has happened repeatedly in many markets from Gold, to Oil, to Biotech, to ETFs. For goodness sakes, you guys have had Rick Ackerman on for years and he’s nailed dozens of tops and bottoms just using his method.
