UK imports food because it never could support the population……there is not enough farm land despite strict zoning laws limiting building. (Remember the UK is north of the latitude of the continental US, with a population of 65 million.)
Yes it can grow some specialist crops; it has to because farm land is too expensive for many ordinary crops.
