Thanks for bringing back the politics and economics section. Much appreciated.
The “trump agreement”, according to Trump himself, is not really a final agreement; merely an agreement to start to negotiate.

Harlan says Germans want to buy American cars. Really? So how come Opel went out of business in 2017?

Harlan says Trump is inexperienced in American politics, and then goes on to prove Trump, who focussed on electoral college votes, has more knowledge and better mature judgement than Hillary Clinton, who has been in politics much of her life.

His point being this is the first political office Trump has held. I personally don’t hold that against the President and I don’t think that you do either. After all, he did win the election.

Larry Amernich is right about agriculture, except that countries have a very strong tendency to desire at least some self-dependence on food production. In Europe this may be a result of problems with food distribution that occurred during WWII, although memories of those problems are fading.

When discussing rade, to bring in considerations of capital account versus current account is a bit of a red herring. The capital account is more dependent on currency strengths or stabilization or investment returns or even political considerations than pure trade considerations.

I think Harlan has a good feel for what has transpired this past week in Singapore and it doesn’t quite reach the levels of achievement that trump claims. Wish it did. The Korean issue isn’t good and never has been. Somehow we’ve got to get on top of the problem and solve it. Unfortunately, our side of the table is a bit short in negotiation abilities/strengths. We’re not dealing with the Anglo mindset and we’ve never been good trying to understand the Asian cultures. Wish we had some advisors, participants of Harlan’s capability. JMO

I disliked Trump’s flattery of N. Korea’s Rocketman, but hope that was simply a negotiation tactic. Clearly, denuclearization, if possible, is better via negotiation than by use of military force.
I don’t think Trump is fooled by Fatboy Kim. Trump should be well aware of political prisoners and harsh dictatorship methods, but it is impossible to criticize or insult and then try to negotiate.

Just bringing ups few facts for those that are interested from the Office of National Statistics (UK). In 1957 ‘food and drink’ were 33% of average income whereas now it’s less than 15% and in the US it’s 6.4%. The report said that if there were not subsidies food prices would be much higher. So I think it would be difficult to have free trade on agriculture (without subsidies) as inflation would shoot up. It’s a very interesting topic though.

      CFS
      Jun 16, 2018 16:39 AM

Nigel, your citation illustrates the warped thinking that socialist policies create.

Do you think the taxation needed to pay for the subsidies; the inefficiency produced by subsidies and the expense of the bureaucracy involved in handing out subsidies actually reduces food production costs?

Of course it does not. Office of National Statistics is quoting apparent food costs, not the actual food costs.
Heck, I could make “food and drink” costs less than 1% of average income by handing out food stamps to everyone.

        Jun 16, 2018 16:31 PM

Hi CFS, I personally agree with what I think you are getting at. In that, I don’t think agriculture should be a special case for subsidies it just distorts the prices and creates an inefficient market. In addition, it forces farmers to grow crops that get the greatest subsidies rather than what people want. My only caveat (and I admit I haven’t thought this through properly) is that for example with milk in the UK, the big four supermarkets have pushed the price down so far it’s not really economic if you are making 1p per litre. So I actually think we should pay realistic prices for food, cut the subsidies etc. Apparently, we in the ‘west’ throw away 30% of our food because it’s gone past its sell by date, maybe we should pay the real price and be a bit more thoughtful

    Jun 16, 2018 16:08 AM

Might have to rethink the cost and percentage of budget. ….in 1957…no GMO foods . Today one must buy organic to keep from getting sick. In 1957 the food was healthier. Today, the chemicals are being introduced in the food chain.
Organic foods are twice the cost of regular foods, so the percentage cost to income will change. I think those percentages are not comparing apples to apple , so to speak… 🙂

I hate to keep sticking up for guests but I will continue to do so. Unemployment numbers are very interesting as we have discussed repeatedly in the past. I look at the folks here in the Northwest and I see a large amount of “tent cities”; beggars; and , generally dangerous people populating cities like Seattle and Bellingham, Washington.

I have come to the conclusion that these folks are where they are, to a large extent, by choice. Begging in Bellingham has evolved to be an organized activity. With locations taken over by the same group of people. I would be very curious to see just how much money they take in.

I am planning on doing a piece this coming week on the psychological make up of the folks who have chosen to beg instead of work. Will be interesting to see where that goes!

Mr. Big Al Korelin, the fact is if the gooberment were calculating the unemployment rate the way they did in the 80’s unemployment would be sky high, same for inflation.

          Jun 16, 2018 16:19 PM

And back in the 80s you could actually earn a real rate of return on your savings unlike today where when you factor in inflation and taxes you are guaranteed to lose.

Mr. Big Al Korelin, will you ever learn that the gooberment and its statistics are a scam?

Interesting how they never mention how much the companies are paying. I know a guy in IT who’s job got shipped over-seas so he was contemplating changing careers and going into CNC. There are plenty of CNC related jobs in his area but the employers want two years of experience and only paid $17 an hour. So he was looking at a two year program at a junior college to get the skill set than another two years at entry level to earn $17 an hour. Instead he decided to take early retirement.

Harlin is just parroting the same old tired neocon crap that has put this country in debt for centuries. This is what is wrong with the military today. There has never been a consequence to the complete an utter failure of our flag officers in the navy, and high-ranking officers of the other branches I say this as a former Army officer. Failure is like this guy are the reason why we went to a Iraq, Libya Et al

      Jun 16, 2018 16:21 PM

Chris, you are completely wrong. Harlan expounds on the mistakes of the Neocons in his book: “The Anatomy of Failure”

        Jun 16, 2018 16:58 PM

I’d say Harlan doesn’t disagree with most of the goals of the neocons or what they were trying to do. He just disagrees with how they tried to do it.

And this makes sense as Harlan is a man of empire and a man of the MICC whereas most people who visit this site range from people who believe in republics to anarcho-capitalists.

          Jun 16, 2018 16:01 PM

Atlantic Council? A man of empire, indeed…

          From Wikipedia…
          Harlan Kenneth Ullman (born March 15, 1941[citation needed]), is Chairman of the Killowen Group that advises leaders of government and business; Chairman of CNIGuard Ltd and CNIGuard Inc, engaged in protection of critical infrastructure; Senior Advisor of the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC;

            Jun 16, 2018 16:19 PM

Here’s some info on the Atlantic Council by PCR…

These bastards are going to get us into a war with the Rooskies.

            https://www.globalresearch.ca/natos-atlantic-council-the-marketing-arm-of-the-militarysecurity-complex/5537797

            Jun 16, 2018 16:23 PM

And boys…you better get back to work to pay those taxes because even if we can somehow manage to avoid war with the Rooskies the neocon play book is still expensive…

The bill for this deterrence against non-existent “Russian aggression” comes to “some US $26 billion” on top of planned expenditures of US $34 billion. “Poland should move forward expeditiously with procurements,” say the arms salesmen or risk being attacked by superior Russian forces.

The zionist neocons get away with their warmongering because it is profitable for the US military/security complex. Whereas the crazed neocons want real war, the military/security complex only wants the propaganda threat of war. The numerous military/foreign policy think tanks funded by the military/security complex provide the propaganda and made-up threat. This is a dangerous game, because the Russians see a real threat in the hostility that is directed at them.

If anyone wants to read the whole IG report, it is available at:

    https://www.justice.gov/file/1071991/download

One should bear in mind there was a separate investigation into HRC’s criminal activities started by the DOJ back in March this year, and the IG CANNOT make comments about HRC which would prejudice that investigation, and MUST currently be very careful when making statements which might affect many sealed indictments.
There appear to be 9 individuals using insecure emails to conduct government business in violation of the law.

      CFS
      Jun 16, 2018 16:24 PM

I have taken a first glance through the IG report.

It is clear the “pundits of MSM have only read the front end Executive Summary.
They should be ashamed in saying “nothing there”

      e.g. p 398
“We identified three categories of text messages that raised concerns about
potential bias in FBI investigations. The first were text messages of a political
nature commenting on Trump and Clinton. We specifically highlight these text
messages because Strzok and Page played important roles in investigations
involving both Trump and Clinton, and the exchange of these text messages on an
FBI-issued device potentially created an appearance of bias. The second category
we identified were text messages that combined expressions of political sentiments
with a discussion of the Midyear investigation, potentially indicating or creating the
appearance that investigative decisions were impacted by bias or improper
considerations. The third category raised similar questions with respect to the
      Russia investigation. ”
Seems to be pretty clear to me.

As for Comey being fired, we don’t even need the IG report.

Since his firing Comey, while condemning Trump, has admitted he was unaware that Huma Abedin was married to Anthony Weiner. Doesn’t Comey read newspapers?
That alone was reason for dismissal; either on grounds of incompetence or failure to investigate without bias, the background source of many of the emails.

Catherine Austin Fitts – Establishment Stole $50 Trillion & Want to Keep It

Money manager Catherine Austin Fitts says, “The establishment has stolen $50 trillion plus, and they want to keep it, and they want to invest it in the space based economy and not have to give it back to the pension funds. One of the most important techniques they are going to use to do that is basically with digital control, with both of the currency, as well as the systems that do surveillance and control. So, (they think) if we can get 7 billion people on smart phones and 5G coming in from satellites or land, anyway you do it, and everybody has a digital currency, and if you don’t behave, you turn off their currency. We are talking about ways of controlling people through the digital systems which are very, very invasive. . . . If you look at the policies going on, whether it’s the effort to bring in the guns or effort to force cashless, those who are centralizing control of the economy, they want to make sure they have control because when they invest that money, they want to make sure it makes their wealth go up and not the general population’s wealth go up. They don’t want to have to refund those monies back into the pension funds or Social Security. They want to be able to say, well, the money is gone, and we spent too much of it and did not balance the books and etcetera, etcetera. So, this is what this is about. This is about who is going to allocate what resources that are there, and are they going to be in a position to harvest and drain the American taxpayer.”

      CFS:

You can read or at least watch videos. Iran compared to Israel and the US is like a babe in arms. It is beyond logic to see Iran as a terrorist state while ignoring the two countries responsible for the deaths of millions in the last twenty years. You have to be wearing total BS blinders and believe even bit of crap handed to you by the media that is utterly controlled by a religious cult to think that Iran is a terrorist state.

Do you still believe in the Easter Bunny too, just because someone told you he existed.

Watch your brave comrades in arms take down one kid. They are all cowards, lead by war criminals.

Mr. Moriarty, I actually prefer to see first hand. In that way I don’t need to believe or not believe what is said in the media.
When in the US I try not to make derogatory statements about the US, as opposed to statements about specific people.
        Likewise when in the UK.
Over the years I have learned it is wiser to keep a low profile and not poop in the place were I live.

          CFS:

Of all the silly and meaningless things you have said, that ranks right at the top. Someone who loves their country is more than willing to criticize their government when it is literally committing crimes. There are international laws that have formed over centuries about how countries handle conflict. When your country constantly violates them you have a duty to stand up and shout. Citizens should love their country without reservation and their government only when it deserves it.

The purpose of war in the US used to be to accomplish peace. Now the purpose of war is nothing except more war. If you love those who wear uniforms and are prepared to stand in harm’s way to defend you, you don’t send them off to die in meaningless wars for nothing at all. Especially for a country run by and for war criminals belonging to a religious cult.

All that is necessary for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing.

I guess you, Mr. Moriarty, have never had people knocking on your front door.
Let me tell you the business of government is the use of force.
The loss of one home in England burglarized and torched was enough.
I now keep a lower profile. So call a coward, because I realize I am.
I don’t have the courage of Tommy Robinson.

City Health Director Barbara Garcia estimated in 2016 that there were 22,000 intravenous drug users in San Francisco – around one for every 38.9 residents, while the city hands out roughly 400,000 needles per month.

Of the 400,000 needles distributed monthly, San Francisco receives around 246,000 back – meaning that there are roughly 150,000 discarded needles floating around each month – or nearly 2 million per year, according to Curbed.

Pompeo: China Engaging In ‘Predatory Economics 101’
By JEFF KAROUB – Associated Press – 21 minutes ago
DETROIT (AP) — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says China is engaging in “predatory economics 101” and an “unprecedented level of larceny” of intellectual property.

Pompeo made the remarks Monday at the Detroit Economic Club, as global markets reacted to trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Both started putting trade tariffs in motion that are set to take effect from July 6.

Pompeo says China’s recent claims of “openness and globalization” are “a joke.” He says China is a “predatory economic government” that is “long overdue in being tackled.”

Pompeo raised the trade issue directly with China last week, when he met in Beijing with President Xi Jinping and others.

Wall Street has viewed the escalating trade tensions with wariness, fearful they could strangle the economic growth achieved during Trump’s watch.
